With its European release in January 1995, the Sega 32X (Super 32X in Japan), was intended to rival the 32-bit systems such as the 3DO and the Atari Jaguar. It was initially planned as a standalone system, but Sega decided it would be better as an upgrade for those who already owned a Mega Drive.
However, it didn't quite go to plan for Sega this time. There were no games bundled with the machine and none available on release. Indeed, only 27 games were released for the machine in total. Some games also required the Mega CD add-on to work increasing the overall cost.
Despite promising early sales, the 32X bombed and with technical glitches with the hardware hampering the situation further, the Sega 32X is one console Sega would like to forget.
