Sega Dreamcast
Released in Europe in October 1999, the Sega Dreamcast was the world's first 128-bit console and also came with a built-in modem. Initial sales were very strong and boded well for the Dreamcast's future - until Sony's Playstation 2 came along and once again, stole the attention (and sales) away from a Sega console.

By using the internal modem, the Dreamcast allowed users to not only play games online against opponents from around the world but to surf the net and check emails. However, the UK Dreamcast came with a 33.6k modem rather than the US equivalent which was 56k. This rather slowed the experience down somewhat.

Despite its initial promise and a slew of top-class games such as Shenmue, Metropolis Street Racer and Jet Set Radio, the Dreamcast struggled against the PS2 and in March 2001, production of the machine was halted by Sega, signifying their exit (for the moment at least) of the Videogame hardware market, choosing to publish games for other formats instead.
