Released in the UK in 1990, after a 1988 Japanese and a
1989 US (renamed to the Sega Genesis) release, the Mega Drive was the
16-Bit follow up to the Sega Master System.
It boasted better graphics and sound and was well supported by third party
companies such as EA and Acclaim, complemented by Sega's own in-house
games such as Golden Axe, Altered Beast and After Burner
1992 saw the emergence of Sonic the Hedgehog as Sega's new mascot as he
appeared in a vastly popular game which showed off the speed of the
machine.
As with the Master System, Sega also released a smaller
version of their console, the Mega Drive II, which sacrificed the
headphone socket.
