Initially called the VR32 (Virtual Reality 32) and developed by the creator of the Game & Watch and the Game Boy, the Virtual Boy was released in July 1995 in Japan and in August in the US.

However, the Virtual Boy was a complete flop, selling fewer than 800,000 units worldwide. It was such a disaster that it was never released in Europe. There were a number of reasons for this -

- Using the Virtual Boy brought on headaches after even short periods of usage.
- The Virtual Boy wasn't a very portable machine due to its weight requiring a stand to support it which wasn't adjustable.
- The graphics were simple red and black and although 3D were deemed a step backwards.

By August 1996, the Virtual Boy was declared dead by Nintendo with only 14 games seeing a US release. Gunpei Yokoi left Nintendo in disgrace after being blamed for the Virtual Boy's failure.
